Chick-fil-A announces return to England, six years after LGBT+ protests

Chick-fil-A plans to invest over $100 million in the UK over the next decade, creating 70 to 120 local jobs per restaurant as part of its international expansion.

  • On Aug. 26, Chick-fil-A announced it will open its first restaurant in Leeds, England this fall, creating between 70 and 120 local jobs, the company said.
  • After its 2019 Reading pilot drew protests, Chick-fil-A faced objections from LGBTQ+ activists over the founders' donations and later altered its charitable giving, the company says.
  • The firm says the Leeds site is the first of five U.K. restaurants planned over the next two years, with a $100m investment pledged for the next decade.
  • Chick-Fil-A said it will donate $25,000 to U.K. and Singapore non-profits, with the Leeds restaurant led by owner-operator Mike Hoy and run by local owner-operators born and raised in the countries they serve.
  • The expansion marks the chain's first permanent sites outside North America, with Singapore set to open in late 2025 as part of a decade-long, $75 million investment in Asia, the company says.
