Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar fire: 58 rescued, including nine newborns in blaze at hospital

  • A fire broke out at Asian Hospital in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, Maharashtra, early Friday, prompting staff to safely evacuate 58 patients, including nine newborns from the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit , with no injuries reported.
  • Officials suspect a short circuit in an air conditioning unit within the NICU triggered the blaze. Dr. Shoeb Hashmi, who runs the hospital, stated staff noticed smoke and immediately evacuated infants as a precaution.
  • The evacuated newborns were transferred to Ghati Hospital, MGM Hospital, and Sanjeevani Hospital with family consent. Hashmi confirmed the facility has since been cleaned and resumed routine operations.
  • Police officers from the Jawaharnagar station reached the scene and cordoned off the area to manage the incident. No patients or staff members sustained injuries during the emergency.
  • This incident marks the second NICU fire in Maharashtra within ten days. A previous blaze at the District Women Hospital in Amravati killed three newborns and led to 36 rescues.
