Chery SA to take over Nissan factory in Pretoria
Chery SA's acquisition preserves most Rosslyn plant jobs and supplier contracts as Nissan ends local production amid restructuring and market challenges, sales dropped 32.3% last year.
- On Friday, Nissan South Africa said Chery South Africa will acquire the Rosslyn factory land, buildings, and nearby stamping plant, subject to regulatory approvals, with most employees offered similar jobs.
- Faced with underused capacity after NP200 ended, Nissan South Africa's global recovery plan and shrinking local model range prompted a search for a sustainable future for the site.
- With a production history spanning nearly 60 years, the Rosslyn plant has produced iconic models and cut 400 jobs after the NP200 ended, reflecting recent declines at one of two Nissan plants on the continent.
- For workers and suppliers, Nissan said the agreement helps protect jobs and preserves work for the supplier network linked to the factory while transitioning to importer-only status.
- While the deal signals further Chinese manufacturing growth, Chery SA has not disclosed the deal value or model but confirmed it will build an SUV, joining BAIC and Foton in South Africa.
