Alonso Says Chelsea Ambition Clear After End of Boehly Era

Clearlake said the club’s ambition is to win major trophies and build sustained success after taking full control from Todd Boehly and Mark Walter.

  • On Wednesday, Chelsea announced that Clearlake Capital, led by co-founders Behdad Eghbali and Jose E. Feliciano, will acquire the ownership stakes held by Todd Boehly and director Mark Walter.
  • Prior to the transaction, private equity firm Clearlake owned 61.5 percent of the club, while Boehly and Walter shared the remaining stake with Swiss billionaire Hansjorg Wyss, who remains a partner.
  • The Financial Times reported that the pair will receive $1.27 billion for their combined stakes in a deal valuing Chelsea at about 5 billion including debt.
  • Blues boss Xabi Alonso, who started his role on July 1, called the change an "important day for the club" and stated the ambition to "compete at the highest level" remains "very clear."
  • Boehly and Walter also sold their stakes in French Ligue 1 side Strasbourg, ceding full control of the partner club to Clearlake.
