Pringles, Cheerios, Nutella Among Thousands of Products Recalled for Possible Rodent Contamination

FDA raises recall to Class II for nearly 2,000 products from Gold Star Distribution due to contamination risks from rodent and bird waste, with no illnesses reported yet.

  • On Thursday, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration elevated the recall to Class II after inspection found contamination risk at Minnesota-based Gold Star, affecting nearly 2,000 products, Amber Raiken reported.
  • Following December inspections, the FDA found rodent and avian contamination at Gold Star, including rodent excreta, urine, and bird droppings in areas holding food, medicine, cosmetics and medical devices, warning these conditions risk contamination with filth and harmful microorganisms.
  • The affected products include well-known brands such as Nutella, Cheerios, Jif Peanut Butter, Pringles and Skittles, spanning packaged snacks, prepared foods, pet food, medicines, beverages like Gatorade, and over-the-counter medicines including Advil and Tylenol.
  • Consumers are instructed to destroy affected items and retailers must submit destruction verification to Gold Star at 1000 N. Humboldt Ave, Minneapolis, MN 55411; Gold Star will provide refunds and can be contacted at 612-617-9800.
  • Health officials warned exposure could lead to Salmonella or Leptospira, with infants, young children, older adults, pregnant people and immunocompromised individuals at higher risk, as products reached stores in Indiana, North Dakota and Minnesota.
