OpenAI launches a general purpose agent in ChatGPT
SAN FRANCISCO, UNITED STATES, JUL 18 – OpenAI’s ChatGPT Agent automates multi-step tasks like planning and analysis while keeping users in control with explicit permissions and interrupt options, launching first to paid subscribers.
- On July 17, 2025, OpenAI released ChatGPT Agent, introducing autonomous task automation.
- Building on earlier experiments, the ChatGPT Agent integrates Operator and Deep Research and runs on a reinforcement learning–trained model.
- During the livestream, OpenAI members demoed what it'd be like to use ChatGPT Agent to plan a wedding, navigating sites, finding hotels and gifts, while users could pause and guide tasks.
