OpenAI launches a general purpose agent in ChatGPT

SAN FRANCISCO, UNITED STATES, JUL 18 – OpenAI’s ChatGPT Agent automates multi-step tasks like planning and analysis while keeping users in control with explicit permissions and interrupt options, launching first to paid subscribers.

  • On July 17, 2025, OpenAI released ChatGPT Agent, introducing autonomous task automation.
  • Building on earlier experiments, the ChatGPT Agent integrates Operator and Deep Research and runs on a reinforcement learning–trained model.
  • During the livestream, OpenAI members demoed what it'd be like to use ChatGPT Agent to plan a wedding, navigating sites, finding hotels and gifts, while users could pause and guide tasks.
  • OpenAI rolled out ChatGPT Agent to Pro, Plus and Team tiers today, with Pro access by end of day and others soon, according to OpenAI.
  • In the coming weeks, OpenAI will release technical documentation and safety guidelines as developer access expands, and according to OpenAI, users will soon deploy custom agents.
