OpenAI to Start Showing Ads on ChatGPT's Free and Go Tiers in India
The rollout gives Indian businesses access to sponsored placements as OpenAI says ads will stay off paid plans and avoid sensitive topics.
On Thursday, August 27, OpenAI announced ChatGPT Ads will roll out to all users above 18 on Free and Go tiers in India, targeting one of the company's largest markets with more than 100 million weekly active users.
Ahead of a potential IPO expected this year or next, OpenAI is cementing revenue sources after recording $6.7 billion in second-quarter revenue ended June 2026, up from $5.7 billion the previous quarter.
Dave Dugan, Vice President and Head of Global Ads Solutions at OpenAI, stated ads will preserve "independent answers, conversations that stay private from advertisers, and meaningful user control," with a self-serve ad manager launching September 4, 2026, at a $7.60 daily minimum budget.
Paid subscribers to ChatGPT Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise, and Education plans remain completely ad-free, while OpenAI said it will not sell user data or expose conversations to advertisers, though personalisation data may inform ad delivery.
Anthropic stands alone among major AI companies by keeping its chatbot ad-free, while Microsoft Copilot and Google's AI Overviews both feature advertisements; OpenAI contends advertising revenue funds free and affordable AI access without influencing response quality.
