French police raid house for drugs and find a Picasso

Police said the painting was authenticated as a Picasso worth up to 15 million euros after investigators found it while searching for drugs.

  • On Monday, investigators in Champigny-sur-Marne discovered a Pablo Picasso painting while raiding a home during a drug trafficking investigation, according to the Creteil prosecutor's office.
  • The painting, which depicts the Spanish artist's partner, was reportedly stolen from a Paris storage facility by an employee allegedly seeking to expose security flaws.
  • Authenticated as a genuine Cubist work, the painting is estimated to be worth between 12 and 15 million euros. "This discovery was made during a search carried out as part of an investigation into drug trafficking," the Creteil prosecutor's office said.
  • On Friday, four people appeared before a court for an immediate hearing regarding the case, as authorities processed luxury clothing and cash seized during the Paris raid.
  • The recovered artwork belongs to a woman from Singapore; comparable pieces like Woman in Beret and Checkered Dress have sold for high prices at auction.
