Challenging Hate Through Empathy and Courage
Leah Harper Bowron's debut novel, Colorblind: A Novel, is set in 1968 Montgomery, Alabama, during a time of widespread discrimination and the fight against hate.
The story follows Miss Annie Loomis, the first African-American teacher at an all-white school, and Lisa Parker, a young white student with a cleft palate, both of whom face cruelty and bullying.
Despite their differences, Annie and Lisa share the experience of being seen as different and demonstrate great courage to endure their challenges.
The novel's theme centers on overcoming hate through compassion, empathy, and moral courage, highlighting resilience and lessons from the Civil Rights era to today.
