Chain-Reaction Crash Involving FDNY Truck in Brooklyn Leaves 1 Person Dead, Several Injured

A firetruck with lights and sirens on caused a chain-reaction crash killing one and injuring 11 in Brooklyn, including five firefighters taken to hospital, police said.

  • On Tuesday, a chain-reaction crash in the Gravesend neighborhood, Brooklyn, involving an FDNY firetruck and three other vehicles at Avenue S and West 11th Street sent a dozen people to hospitals with at least 10 injured.
  • The FDNY truck was traveling eastbound on Avenue S with lights and sirens when it struck a westbound commercial van, pushing it into the westbound lane where it hit an Access-A-Ride coach that then struck a Lexus SUV, and the firetruck also hit two parked cars.
  • Emergency responders transported multiple people to hospitals after the crash, including at least five firefighters, the driver of the commercial van, driver of the Lexus, and Access-A-Ride driver and passengers; the commercial van's front was torn off and debris scattered.
  • Police said the fatality was identified as Placido Dandrea, and neighbors said he had just returned from a medical appointment with his wife, standing about 50 feet from their home.
  • NYPD investigators said they have not yet established right of way and the FDNY did not immediately provide the truck's destination, while surveillance video shows the firetruck with lights and sirens heading east on Avenue S before striking the white commercial van.
