Ceuta: Madrid to Transfer 500 Vulnerable Youths to Mainland

  • The National Police identified 2,168 minors in Ceuta by Tuesday, August 18, while the Ministry for Youth and Children works to transfer 500 migrant girls to mainland Spain following the July 30-31 influx.
  • Elma Saiz, Minister for Inclusion, Social Security and Migration, insisted on the need to "protect the best interests of the child," stressing that "these are girls who are on their own."
  • The Social Security minister allocated €25 million to help Ceuta, while Ministry sources explain a royal decree-law provides for "compulsory, solidarity-based reception" to accelerate transfers.
  • European Commission spokesperson Markus Lammert stressed on Tuesday that the priority is to "guarantee the swift return of all those who remain irregularly in Ceuta," citing "the Return Directive."
  • Morocco last week asked Spain to return citizens remaining in the enclave, though several autonomous communities stated they will not accept minors, prompting the Ministry to criticise a lack of "Solidarity.
