Government withdraws 20% export duty on onion effective April 1
- The central government has withdrawn the 20% export duty on onions, effective April 1, 2025, which was imposed in September 2024.
- The government has checked exports through various measures since December 2023 and took export control measures until May 2024.
- Total onion exports during 2023-24 reached 17.17 lakh tonnes, and this winter's rabi production is estimated at 227 lakh metric tonnes, which is 18% higher than last year.
- The Ministry of Consumer Affairs stated that the decision supports farmers and maintains onion affordability for consumers due to expected increases in rabi crop availability.
