Paradip Port Gets 'Mega Port' Status, only One on East Coast
Paradip Port’s new status is expected to improve infrastructure, operations and maritime connectivity, officials said, as three other ports also received the designation.
- On Friday, the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways designated Paradip Port as a 'Mega Port' under the Indian Ports Act, 2025, making it the only such facility on India's eastern coast.
- Joint Secretary Praveen P Nair issued the notification after Paradip Port met structural and operational criteria under Section 73 of the Act, with the designation becoming effective upon publication in the Gazette of India.
- Along with Paradip, the government designated Deendayal Port , Jawaharlal Nehru Port , and Mundra Port as Mega Ports; Paradip serves as a crucial maritime gateway for central and east India.
- Chairperson Susanta Kumar Purohit said the 'Mega Port' status is a 'significant milestone' for the port's development, enhancing infrastructure growth, operational efficiency, and maritime trade for the Odisha-based facility.
- The classification facilitates further port development, and Purohit expressed gratitude to Union Minister for Ports, Shipping and Waterways Sarbananda Sonowal and Minister of State Shantanu Thakur for strengthening India's maritime sector.
