India’s 2027 Census launches digital self-enumeration April 1, with over 31 lakh enumerators for two-phase data on demographics, housing, caste, and religion.
- On April 1, India begins its first census since 2011, launching a digital self-enumeration portal as Registrar General and Census Commissioner Mritunjay Kumar Narayan confirmed the exercise will feature two distinct phases of data collection.
- Originally scheduled for 2021, the decennial survey was delayed by the COVID-19 pandemic, and the government now aims to count the population of more than 1.4 billion people using digital technology for the first time.
- Phase 1, Houselisting and Housing Census, focuses on housing conditions and assets, while Phase 2, Population Enumeration, will capture demographic data, including caste and religion, which the Cabinet approved.
- Citizens do not need to submit documents during enumeration, Narayan stated, assuring data confidentiality, while the self-enumeration portal will be available in 16 languages, generating a 16-digit ID for verification.
- More than 3 million Indian officials will conduct the exercise, supported by over 31 lakh functionaries, and the Census is expected to conclude in March 2027.
