Soccer-Former Spurs Defender Vega Declares Intention to Run Against Infantino
Vega became the first public challenger as UEFA loses confidence in Infantino after a rejected private investor plan.
On Wednesday, former Tottenham Hotspur defender Ramon Vega announced his candidacy for the FIFA presidency, becoming the first challenger to incumbent Gianni Infantino for next year's election.
Infantino faces mounting pressure after a failed private investor plan for World Cup commercial rights, prompting several European football associations to withdraw their endorsements of the FIFA leader.
Vega, 55, who made 23 appearances for Switzerland, stated in his manifesto that he intends to "reunite the global football family" and "restore stability and credibility" to the governing body.
UEFA has called its 55 member federations to a summit on Thursday in Berlin, where officials plan to discuss FIFA governance amid ongoing European efforts to identify a new leader.
Candidates must submit bids by November 18 and pass eligibility checks, while Infantino maintains support from approximately 90 pledged votes among FIFA's 211 member federations ahead of the March election.
