National Central University names asteroid after Pingtung's Hengchun - Focus Taiwan
Taipei, Oct. 11 (CNA) National Central University (NCU) on Saturday announced that an asteroid it discovered has been officially named "Hengchun," coinciding with the 150th anniversary of the Pingtung County township's founding.
In 2025, the 150th anniversary of Hengchun's founding, Pingtung once again received a blessing from the universe. The International Astronomical Union (IAU/CSBN) approved the official name of asteroid 724875, "HENGCHUN." A press conference was held at the Pingtung General Atlas on the 11th. This is the third celestial body named after a place in Pingtung, following "Pingtung Asteroid" in 2016 and "Kenting Asteroid" in 2021.
