Teen Mental Health Moving in Better Direction, According to CDC Survey

The 36-page report highlights gains in teen nutrition and mental health while leaving out many long-running measures on substance use and violence.

  • The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention released its 2025 Youth Risk Behavior Survey, narrowing focus to five areas: diet, physical activity, sleep, digital behavior, and mental health. The report is substantially shorter than the 2023 version.
  • Mental health metrics showed improvement, with persistent feelings of sadness or hopelessness among high school students falling to 33% in 2025 from 40% in 2023. Students who seriously considered attempting suicide dropped to 14% from 22% in 2021.
  • Dietary trends showed positive shifts, with 39% of students reporting daily fruit intake in 2025, up from 33% in 2023, while 63% reported daily vegetable consumption and daily soda consumption fell to 17% from 20% in 2015.
  • Child Mind Institute psychologist Dr. Dave Anderson said he is "cautiously optimistic," though he warned improvements could be a "correction related to pandemic stress" rather than a lasting shift over the 10-year span.
  • CDC deputy director Dr. Jennifer Shuford touted the improvements, stating that "progress is possible when schools, families, and communities work together" to support young people's health into adulthood.
