CDC Sees 10,000 Ebola Deaths Among Possible Outbreak Scenarios
CDC says rapid isolation and sustained public health measures could keep the outbreak under 10,000 cases, but delays may push it above 20,000.
- New analyses released Friday by the CDC warn the current Ebola outbreak in Africa could rival the 2014-2016 West Africa surge of about 28,000 cases, with projections suggesting 20,000 cases and at least 4,000 deaths within three months.
- Jason Asher from the CDC Center for Forecasting and Outbreak Analytics explained that isolation timing is critical; if only 20% of cases enter isolation within two days, projections show more than 20,000 cases in two of three scenarios.
- Jennifer Nuzzo of the Brown University School of Public Health said the analysis affirms the outbreak's "dangerous trajectory," though Asher noted a 94% probability of limiting the outbreak to fewer than 10,000 cases if 70% of patients isolate within two days.
- Despite dire warnings, Satish Pillai, the CDC Ebola response incident manager, stated the domestic risk remains low, adding there is no reason to change behavior or worry about travel except to the Democratic Republic of Congo or Uganda.
- Anthony Banbury, who led the Mission for Ebola Emergency Response, warned in The Washington Post Thursday that the "Ebola crisis in Africa will spin out of control without a significant shift in the international response.
