Three Customs and Border Protection officers fired at a driver who sped through secondary inspection and nearly hit them, with no officers injured, authorities said.
- On Monday evening near 9 p.m. at the Otay Mesa Port of Entry, a group of federal border agents discharged their weapons at a 59-year-old man who attempted to flee a secondary inspection.
- The man tried to flee after being referred to secondary inspection but was blocked at the north end and drove south at high speed nearly hitting several officers.
- Following gunfire from federal officers, the suspect ceased driving and gave himself up; he sustained minor injuries from shards of shattered windshield glass, while none of the officers were harmed in the event.
- San Diego Police Department’s Homicide Unit and Homeland Security Investigations are investigating the incident, with the district attorney, FBI, and U.S. Attorney’s Office also reviewing actions and use of force.
- The case outcome will depend on ongoing reviews including HSI’s administrative probe into officers’ firearm discharge and the district attorney’s determination of any criminal liability.
