CBC begins search for Canada's first-ever Eurovision competitor

Canadian artists 18 and older can register through Sept. 9 as CBC/Radio-Canada uses a public vote and jury to choose its first Eurovision representative.

  • Starting August 31, 2026, CBC/Radio-Canada will begin accepting applications for Canada's first Eurovision Song Contest representative, seeking a magnetic Canadian artist to perform at the 71st competition in Burgas, Bulgaria, next May.
  • Canada officially joined the European Broadcasting Union earlier this summer, granting eligibility to compete for the first time, marking the country's first appearance since Australia debuted over a decade ago.
  • Applications for the competition close September 9, requiring interested Canadian citizens or permanent residents at least 18 years old to apply; a shortlist will be announced this fall before the public joins a music-industry jury to select the finalist.
  • Collaborating with industry experts, the selected artist will develop their original song and performance, a process ensuring the public helps decide who represents Canada on the world's biggest music stage.
  • Though new to the competition, Canadian artists have previously competed for other nations, most famously when Celine Dion won for Switzerland in 1988; now a Canadian artist will finally take the stage under Canada's own name.
