Cause of Death Revealed for Two Ole Miss Students in Court
Court records say both students had the same three substances in their systems as prosecutors linked 500 seized kratom-like pills to the deaths.
- On Friday, legal proceedings at the Oxford Federal Courthouse revealed that 18-year-old Aidan Hamilton and 20-year-old Robert Strang, both Ole Miss students, died on Sept. 21 from distinct causes: one from combined substances including cough syrup, the other from inhalation asphyxiation.
- Following the deaths, Lafayette County Metro Narcotics agents targeted Puffs Vape, Tobacco and Beer Store after discovering the victims purchased substances there before their deaths. Employees Yahya Mosleh and his son, Islam Mosleh, face distribution charges.
- Seized during a search, 500 units of kratom-like products included packages of Smax Mango Breeze containing Mitrogynine, MGM-15, and MGPI—substances identical to those found in the victims' toxicology reports.
- A federal judge ordered Yahya Mosleh to remain in custody, citing his status as a flight risk with ties to Egypt. His son, Islam Mosleh, was released on a $20,000 unsecured bond with conditions.
- Court records reveal the dangers posed by these products; a store clerk warned a confidential informant to "be careful taking the pills, because people are dying," demonstrating prior knowledge of the risks.
