Cathy Hughes Dedicates Key To Washington, D.C. To Urban One Employees
Bowser honored Hughes for building Urban One into a major Black-owned media company and for mentoring generations of journalists and broadcasters.
- On July 15, Mayor Muriel Bowser presented Urban One founder Cathy Hughes with the Key to the City during a special edition of Majic Wednesdays in Ward 8, honoring her decades of amplifying Black voices.
- Arriving in Washington over 50 years ago, Hughes began her career at Howard University's WHUR, where she created the Quiet Storm format before purchasing WOL-AM and building it into Urban One, a major Black-owned multimedia company.
- Hughes also played a significant role in supporting Washington's iconic Go-Go music scene and followed a vision to remove the "mute button" from Black communities, creating platforms for their own stories.
- During an interview on The QuickSilva Morning Show, Hughes dedicated the honor to Urban One employees, calling them her "destiny guides" and stating, "That key belongs to each and every one of us."
- Beyond her historic business accomplishments, Hughes continues to mentor generations of media professionals and remains committed to providing platforms that center Black stories, history and voices for future generations.
