Ban on Category Two Fires in Southeast Fire Centre Rescinded
Category 2 open fires will again be allowed across the fire centre, while Category 3 bans remain in place since May 21, officials said.
- Effective at 1 p.m. Mountain Time on Friday, the B.C. Wildfire Service lifted the Category 2 fire prohibition throughout the Southeast Fire Centre, including the Rocky Mountain Natural Resource District and the Selkirk Natural Resource District.
- Favorable forecasts and recent precipitation prompted the rescission, joining Category 1 campfires which were already permitted last week. The Wildfire Service cited improved overnight recoveries as reducing wildfire risk in the region.
- Permitted activities now include Category 2 fires, fireworks, burn barrels, and controlled air incinerators. A Category 2 fire involves material in one or two piles not exceeding 2 metres in height and 3 metres in width, or stubble burning under 0.2 hectares.
- Anyone lighting fires must follow Wildfire Regulation Section 20 and Section 21, including the requirement to "Do not burn in windy conditions." Maintaining a fuel break and fully extinguishing fires before leaving are mandatory safety steps.
- Category 3 fires remain prohibited throughout the Southeast Fire Centre. Violators face potential penalties including fines up to $100,000 or a $1,150 ticket, plus liability for all firefighting costs if their fire causes a wildfire.
