An American Maine Coon has claimed a remarkable world record. The cat, Erebus Anomaly, has no fewer than 29 toes, eleven more than a cat normally has. The extra toes are the result of a hereditary abnormality that is particularly common in Maine Coons.

The American kitten Erebus Anomaly entered the record book after birth with 29 fingers. Common domestic cats have 18 fingers (five on each front leg and four on each back). The previous record was recorded in 2002 and tied in March of this year — Jake and Toby had 28 fingers.
