Casualties reported after shoe factory fire in China’s Fujian, state media says
Fire and rescue teams dispatched about 200 workers as officials said casualties were confirmed and the cause remained under investigation.
Multiple people are trapped after a fire broke out on Thursday at a shoe factory in Jinjiang, Fujian, with authorities confirming casualties while exact numbers remain undisclosed.
China's Ministry of Emergency Management dispatched some 200 fire and rescue workers to the facility, launching an "all-out" effort to extinguish the blaze and rescue those trapped inside.
Fire and rescue teams deployed 183 people and 35 vehicles to the site, according to CCTV, with open flames largely extinguished by 5.40pm as firefighting efforts continued.
President Jinping declared "heavy human losses" were expected in Jinjiang, stating "No effort must be spared in search and rescue operations and in supporting the families."
The Ministry called for an investigation into the fire's cause, citing past deadly incidents in Hong Kong and Guangdong that killed 168 and 12 people respectively, prompting Beijing's renewed safety campaigns.
