Cassidy says abortion pill makers turn blind eye to safety

- On Thursday, Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee Chair Bill Cassidy released a report faulting the Food and Drug Administration for lackluster oversight of mifepristone manufacturers, alleging companies fail to ensure safety compliance.
- Cassidy's committee investigated Danco Laboratories, GenBioPro, and Evita Solutions, finding the three companies could not detail how they ensure prescribing procedures follow federal safety protocols known as Risk Evaluation and Mitigation Strategies .
- Both Danco and GenBioPro make profits almost solely from mifepristone, which Cassidy claims creates risks for coercion and abuse as the explosion in online sales allows drugs to be distributed without in-person patient-provider relationships.
- Cassidy demanded the Food and Drug Administration take immediate action to reestablish in-person dispensing requirements, arguing the agency and sponsors have a responsibility to "crack down on prescribers" violating safety protocols.
- A pending court case in which Louisiana is suing the FDA could determine mail-order abortion pill availability nationwide, with the Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals scheduled to hear oral arguments on Sept. 9.
