Case against Lizzo's Big Grrl Touring company dropped by federal judge
Judge Fernando L. Aenlle-Rocha said the plaintiff failed to show misconduct or disability-level injuries in the seven remaining claims.
- On Monday, Judge Fernando L. Aenlle-Rocha dismissed the remaining seven claims in a lawsuit against Lizzo's production company Big Grrrl Big Touring, concluding an almost three-year legal battle over alleged discrimination and harassment.
- Former wardrobe assistant Asha Daniels filed the lawsuit in September 2023, alleging she faced "degradation, forced physical labour, denial of medical care, sexual harassment, and racial harassment" during the European leg of Lizzo's tour.
- Judge Aenlle-Rocha ruled that while the alleged incidents were "while inappropriate and unprofessional," they fell "within the scope of what the Supreme Court has held to be outside the protection" of Title VII as "ordinary tribulations of the workplace."
- In an Instagram post, Lizzo—whose real name is Melissa Viviane Jefferson—expressed she was "relieved" at the outcome and will "continue to fight" every claim made against her and her company.
- The court rejected Daniels' claims of racial discrimination against supervisor Amanda Nomura and ruled her injuries "were insufficiently severe or long-term to qualify as disabilities" under the Americans with Disabilities Act, building on a 2024 ruling dismissing an eighth cause of action against BGBT for labour violations.
