Carney Pledges $2 Billion for Ukraine, More Sanctions Four Years After Invasion

Canada commits $2 billion in military aid, renews training mission, and expands sanctions targeting 21 individuals, 53 entities, and 100 Russian vessels involved in evading oil sanctions.

  • Prime Minister Mark Carney on Tuesday pledged $2 billion in military aid and more sanctions as Ukraine marked four years since Moscow's full-scale invasion.
  • Russia launched its full-scale invasion on Feb. 24, 2022, after earlier moves in 2014; the war has killed tens of thousands and left Russia controlling roughly 20 per cent of Ukraine.
  • The package also provides $20 for energy infrastructure repairs, sanctions on 21 individuals and 53 entities, and more than 400 armoured vehicles, Ottawa said.
  • Four years on, Carney said, `Russia is failing militarily, strategically and economically, and we are in it for the long term`, demonstrating Canada's unwavering support and allied coordination, including a Coalition of the Willing meeting.
  • Canada is working with Ukraine and international partners to accelerate efforts toward a just and lasting peace backed by robust security guarantees and to degrade Russia's military capabilities by targeting cryptocurrency infrastructure, AI systems, and drone production.
