Carney discussed artificial intelligence with Pope Leo
The prime minister said AI should protect people and support the common good as Ottawa prepares a national strategy.
On Friday, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney discussed Artificial Intelligence with Pope Leo XIV at The Vatican, emphasizing the "imperative that AI must serve humanity" and Canada's desire to lead internationally on responsible technology.
Magnifica Humanitas, the Pope's first encyclical published earlier this week, urged governments to slow down Artificial Intelligence development, warning that systems prioritize conflict and risk leading the world down a path of unending war.
A Vatican press release noted the pair discussed "the importance of developing artificial intelligence from an ethical perspective and with a human-centred approach," while Carney's office stated he is "welcoming the Pope's leadership in this field."
On Monday, Minister of Digital Innovation Evan Solomon announced a new data centre, as the federal government will release its long-awaited national Artificial Intelligence strategy next week.
Meanwhile, Manitoba announced Canada's first social media and Artificial Intelligence chatbot ban for those under 16, a move the federal government has previously indicated it is considering.
