Garda Patrols After Threatening Email to Carlow Schools
More than 10 primary schools closed after Gardaí assessed the anonymous threat as a possible hoax and opened an investigation.
On Wednesday, more than 10 primary schools across Carlow closed after receiving anonymous emails threatening a mass shooting. Garda authorities stepped up patrols while suspecting the threat was an elaborate hoax.
Local Fine Gael Councillor Fergal Browne described the threat as a 'generic email' sent from an unknown Gmail account. Up to 16 primary schools were targeted by the suspicious communication.
After liaising with Garda, some schools remained open while others stayed closed. Management was asked to conduct a 'cursory search of your building and grounds' and warned against clicking links due to ransomware risks.
The Department confirmed it is working closely with Garda to assess the situation. Parents and the public with suspicious information are advised to contact Carlow Garda Station on 059-9136620 or 999.
Although investigators suspect an elaborate hoax, Principal Browne emphasized reviewing school safety protocols once the scare subsides. Schools have tightened security measures in recent years, though vigilance without overreaction remains essential.
