Carjacking Suspect Loaded Onto Ambulance After Being Rescued From Lake
Authorities rescued the suspect after he jumped into Lake Pontchartrain and refused help for nearly 30 minutes, police said.
- On Wednesday, authorities arrested Kentrell Tremaine Sanders after he jumped from the Causeway Bridge into Lake Pontchartrain following a police pursuit. Causeway Police recovered him from the water, allowing southbound lanes to reopen shortly before noon.
- Sanders allegedly began a violent crime spree around 6 a.m. in Assumption Parish, involving home invasions and two stabbings. He then drove a stolen white pickup truck to Mandeville, attempting to carjack a Southeastern University student before fleeing onto the Causeway.
- The stolen vehicle ran out of gas near the 10-mile marker on the bridge, prompting Sanders to exit and jump into the water. He refused rescue assistance from the U.S. Coast Guard for nearly 30 minutes before eventually entering a life basket.
- Following his rescue, the 45-year-old Napoleonville man was transported by EMS to a south shore hospital and remains in police custody. Sanders faces charges including attempted second-degree murder, home invasion, aggravated battery, and carjacking.
- Court records indicate Sanders has a significant criminal history, including a 2019 burglary conviction for which he was sentenced to 10 years in state prison. Authorities expect to file additional charges related to the second vehicle stolen during his multi-parish spree.
