ADA news: Cardano tapped by Brazil’s state oil giant to track cleaner jet fuel and diesel
- On Wednesday, Petrobras announced two blockchain research projects on Cardano to track environmental claims for sustainable aviation fuel and renewable diesel, developed with the Cardano Foundation and Pontifical Catholic University .
- The collaboration aims to make sustainable fuel data auditable and verifiable for airlines and passengers seeking green fuel proof. Rafael Fraga, LATAM business development lead at the Cardano Foundation, said public blockchain builds trust by design.
- One tool uses a Book-and-Claim model for sustainable aviation fuel, issuing standardized CS-SAF tokens on Cardano that decouple environmental benefits from physical fuel, allowing airlines to claim reductions aligned with CORSIA standards.
- A second proposed model targets Diesel R, recording production and transportation checkpoints to build a complete lifecycle history, helping companies report indirect Scope 3 emissions while preventing double counting of environmental benefits.
- Both initiatives remain in the research phase with no announced timeline for commercial use, extending a relationship that began in December 2023 when the Cardano Foundation launched blockchain workshops for more than 40,000 Petrobras University employees.

ADA news: Cardano tapped by Brazil’s state oil giant to track cleaner jet fuel and diesel
Petrobras is testing the blockchain in two research projects aimed at preventing emissions benefits from being counted twice and tracing fuel data across production and use.
Cardano Foundation Backs Bold Petrobras Renewable Fuel Traceability with Blockchain
TL;DR Cardano Foundation announced two initiatives with Petrobras for blockchain traceability of sustainable aviation fuel and renewable diesel. The Book-and-Claim model separates the environmental benefit from the physical fuel and allows it to be assigned to airlines, companies, or individual passengers. The second project applies digital checkpoints to the Diesel R lifecycle to strengthen scope ...
Petrobras Tests Cardano to Track SAF Environmental Claims
TLDR Petrobras developed CS-SAF with PUC-Rio’s Ledger Labs and the Cardano Foundation. The Cardano-based platform tracks sustainable aviation fuel environmental attributes as digital tokens. CS-SAF records token issuance, allocation, and retirement to reduce duplicate claims. Petrobras’ SAF production at Duque de Caxias has received CORSIA sustainability certification. The case study does not disclose airline users, [...]
Brazilian State Energy Giant Petrobras Taps Cardano for Tracing Fuel
Brazilian state-owned energy firm Petrobras is testing Cardano’s blockchain to track the environmental benefits of renewable fuels, expanding an experiment aimed at making emissions claims easier to verify. Putting Energy Evidence on Cardano The state-controlled oil company is working with the Cardano Foundation and researchers at PUC-Rio on two applications built on the Cardano blockchain, […]
