Netflix Wins the ‘Captain Planet’ Adaptation Race — the Very Polluted History of Reviving the ’90s Cartoon Fave
NEW CASTLE COUNTY, DELAWARE, JUL 17 – Netflix's live-action Captain Planet series is produced by Greg Berlanti and Leonardo DiCaprio, featuring eco-superhero themes to engage new audiences with a 1990s cult classic revival.
- Netflix is developing a live-action series adaptation of the 1990s animated environmental superhero show Captain Planet and the Planeteers.
- The series centers on five teenagers from different parts of the globe who possess magical rings that enable them to summon Captain Planet, a hero who helps them combat environmental threats, inspired by the concept developed by Barbara Pyle and Ted Turner.
- The adaptation is produced by Greg Berlanti's Berlanti Productions, Leonardo DiCaprio's Appian Way, and Warner Bros. Television, with Tara Hernandez writing and executive producing the series.
- Glen Powell co-wrote an early script for the project and was enthusiastic about starring in it, noting that Leonardo DiCaprio was deeply committed to the film. However, reports indicate that Powell is no longer part of the current Netflix adaptation.
- This long-delayed adaptation suggests renewed interest in environmentally themed stories and offers Netflix a chance to revive a cult property with relevance to today's ecological concerns.
