- The Central Armed Police Forces Act, 2026, officially came into force on Thursday, establishing a statutory framework regulating recruitment and service conditions for Group A officers across the five Central Armed Police Forces .
- This legislation replaces the previously fragmented framework governing recruitment, aiming to provide administrative clarity for the Central Reserve Police Force , Border Security Force , Central Industrial Security Force , Indo-Tibetan Border Police , and Sashastra Seema Bal .
- Under the new law, 100 per cent of Special Director General and Director General posts are reserved for Indian Police Service officers, while 67 per cent of Additional Director General and 50 per cent of Inspector General roles require IPS deputation.
- Serving and retired officers have petitioned the Supreme Court, alleging the Act restricts career progression for cadre members compared to deputed IPS officials, potentially impacting institutional morale.
- On October 15, the Supreme Court will hear contempt petitions alongside three writ challenges to the Act's constitutional validity, following its previous May 2025 judgment on cadre issues.
