Man Jailed for Life for Murder of 93-Year-Old Best Friend After 10-Hour Torture
Field was found guilty after jurors heard he tortured Glynn for more than 24 hours and made recordings about a conspiracy.
On Friday, High Court Judge Mr Justice Stephen Eyre sentenced Samuel Field, 40, to life imprisonment with a minimum term of 22 years for murdering 93-year-old Martin Glynn at Northampton Crown Court.
Driven by cannabis-fueled paranoia, Field subjected Glynn to a 34-hour torture session in September 2024, seeking a confession about a perceived "conspiracy" at his Desborough flat.
Glynn, a loyal friend who visited Field twice weekly, suffered brain bleeds and a fractured neck; he died three months later from pneumonia, as his family called him a "quiet, soft-spoken man."
Representing himself, Field admitted assaulting Glynn but denied murder, claiming he never intended to kill him; the jury rejected his defense after an 11-day trial, finding him guilty earlier this month.
Justice Eyre cited Field's prior convictions for attacking children in 2007 and 2008, remarking that these offenses are "chilling echoes" of the current murder, justifying the severe sentence.
