Cannabis raids in N.S., N.B., Ontario tied to transnational organized crime, RCMP say
Police say the searches targeted a transnational organized crime network tied to drug trafficking and money laundering.
On April 26, the RCMP executed search warrants at sites in Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, and Hamilton, Ontario, targeting what police described as a transnational organized crime network involved in drug trafficking and money laundering.
Nova Scotia's Progressive Conservatives issued a directive last year ordering police to crack down on unlicensed cannabis shops, suggesting they were linked to organized crime and prompting these enforcement actions.
Police operations included two locations in Lower Sackville and one in Maitland, but the RCMP declined to provide further details about owners or scope, citing the ongoing investigation.
New Brunswick Indigenous Affairs Minister Keith Chiasson said the raids will not derail negotiations with First Nations, stating "We're going to continue down the same path" toward safe regulated cannabis sales.
Conversely, Nova Scotia Justice Minister Scott Armstrong defended strict enforcement, warning "If you give them a crack, they kick the door wide open," while First Nations leaders criticize government interference.
