Candu Energy-Aecon JV signs $1.7B contract for Pickering Unit 5 refurbishment
The three-year project includes engineering, design and project management work to help extend Unit 5’s operating life into the 2060s, the companies said.
- On Monday, Candu Energy Inc. and Aecon Group Inc. signed a $1.7 billion contract with Ontario Power Generation to refurbish Unit 5 of the Pickering Nuclear Generating Station.
- This agreement is part of a larger $3 billion Pickering refurbishment initiative, which also includes a separate $1.3 billion contract awarded to an Aecon and Siemens Energy consortium for turbine generator replacement.
- Retube, feeder, and boiler replacement work on Unit 5 will precede similar efforts for Units 6, 7, and 8, extending the station's operating life into the 2060s.
- Supporting over 90,000 jobs, the 85% Canadian CANDU supply chain reinforces energy security through natural uranium technology, reducing reliance on foreign enrichment services.
- Aecon Senior Vice President Aaron Johnson noted the company is applying "lessons learned" from the Darlington Refurbishment project. Major project execution is expected to begin in January 2027, pending regulatory approval.
