Candice St-Aubin named interim Commissioner of Indigenous Languages
Candice St-Aubin will serve 90 days or until a new commissioner is named as the office faces a financial audit and misconduct allegations.
On July 13, the federal government will appoint Candice St-Aubin as interim Commissioner of Indigenous Languages, replacing current commissioner Ronald Ignace when his term expires.
The appointment coincides with a financial audit and mandatory five-year review of The Office, prompted by internal strife that Canadian Heritage documents show the department knew about for months before launching the probe.
In an April 2025 letter, former employees alleged 'significant financial mismanagement,' citing $10 million spent on a four-day conference in Ottawa and contracts awarded to friends of officials at above-market rates.
Canadian Heritage Minister Marc Miller called the allegations 'serious' but stressed due process must be followed, while the department confirmed a summary of audit findings will be posted on the commissioner's website.
St-Aubin, a former senior assistant deputy minister at Indigenous Services Canada, will serve a 90-day term or until a permanent commissioner is named, providing interim leadership during the ongoing investigation.
