Mass cybersecurity breach of learning platform hits Canadian post-secondary schools
Instructure took Canvas offline after an unauthorized actor made changes to pages, and more than 9,000 schools worldwide were implicated, officials said.
More than 9,000 educational institutions worldwide, including Canadian universities such as the University of Alberta, University of Toronto, and University of British Columbia, experienced a cyberattack on the Canvas learning management system on April 29, 2026.
Canvas manages grades, assignments, and lecture videos, and some user data like names, emails, student ID numbers, and messages were accessed; however, passwords, financial details, and government IDs were not compromised.
The hacking group ShinyHunters claimed responsibility for the breach, stating that data from hundreds of millions of individuals were stolen, including students and staff.
Affected universities temporarily shut down Canvas access, urged security precautions such as password changes, and investigations involving forensic and law enforcement teams are ongoing.
Several Canadian higher education institutions claim to have been hit by a cyber attack on an education system used by thousands of schools around the world.
