Canadian Tourist Arrested on Suspicion of Stealing, Torturing Flamingo in Las Vegas
Mitchell Fairbarn faces four counts of animal cruelty after breaking into the Flamingo Hotel's wildlife habitat, injuring multiple flamingos and torturing one in his hotel room.
- Early Wednesday, police say Mitchell Fairbarn, 33, was detained after removing a flamingo from the habitat and torturing it, facing four counts of animal cruelty.
- Claiming intoxication and prior farm experience, Fairbarn said he saw a flamingo in distress and 'popped' its wing back into place, despite Wildlife Habitat warning signs.
- Surveillance footage shows Fairbarn grabbing and pinning flamingos, cellphone photos and videos capture him choking a bird and saying 'I'm taking it home', and he carried a flamingo wrapped in a shirt to the 14th floor.
- At a Wednesday hearing, the court ordered bail to remain at $12,000 and mandated conditions including electronic monitoring, surrender of the passport, stay-off-the-Strip, and no possession of animals, while Caesars Entertainment called the incident deeply distressing.
- Authorities concluded Fairbarn willfully and maliciously injured a federally protected migratory species, and he is scheduled for an initial appearance in Las Vegas Justice Court on Monday, March 9.
