Canadian passport now outranks U.S. in tally of visa-free access
Canadian passport holders now access more countries visa-free than Americans, ranking 9th globally amid reciprocal visa policies affecting U.S. travelers, Henley and Partners reported.
- Henley and Partners reported Canadian passport holders have overtaken U.S. passport holders in visa-free access, placing Canada ahead in overall passport strength.
- Reciprocal visa policies from other countries have eased travel for Canadian passport holders, allowing visa-free access to Belarus, Papua New Guinea, Uzbekistan, and visa waivers on arrival in Bolivia and Rwanda.
- Index methodology shows the Henley Passport Index groups countries in blocs when they have access to the same number of destinations, and Henley and Partners has issued the ranking for two decades.
- When the index is disaggregated it shows Canada in 32nd place and the United States in 37th, with both tied last year; Henley says Canada's drop stems partly from countries reimposing visa requirements.
- Henley and Partners singled out China for rapid gains and says China now offers visa-free entry to people from 76 nations, 30 more than the U.S., granting access to 30 additional countries in the past year.
