Canadian General Begins Crying While Apologizing for 'Systemic Racism' and Then Calls It a Milestone
The Canadian Armed Forces committed to eliminating systemic barriers after issuing a $150 million settlement for racial discrimination faced by Indigenous and racialized members.
- On Oct. 30, 2025, Chief of the Defence Staff Gen. Jennie Carignan and Chief Warrant Officer Bob McCann issued a formal apology to Canadian Armed Forces members in Ottawa, with Carignan delivering an emotional address.
- Prompted by a class-action settlement and advisory findings, the CAF acknowledged systemic barriers faced by First Nations, Inuit, Métis, Black, Asian and other racialized members, with planning for the apology beginning last year and delayed from March.
- Media were barred from the ceremony as the CAF adopted a trauma-informed approach, featuring speakers like retired captain Kevin Junor, retired lieutenant-commander Albert Wong, and Wendy Jocko, who said, `An apology, while necessary, is only the beginning.`
- Critics including Rubin Coward argued the apology was hollow, while Justin Woodcock said it validated his experience, after some invitees were told to pay their own way and launched a GoFundMe to attend.
- The Canadian Armed Forces pledged to eliminate systemic barriers, addressed all 8 recommendations from the National Apology Advisory Committee, and implemented 31 of 39 from the ministerial panel, with 2024 recruitment figures showing about 5 per cent Indigenous, roughly 22 per cent visible minorities, and just over 15 per cent women.
