NextStar Energy to Build Energy-Storage Batteries Next as Windsor, Ont. Plant Adapts to EV Market Slowdown
NextStar Energy adds Lithium Iron Phosphate batteries at its Windsor plant to meet rising North American demand for grid-scale storage fueled by AI and renewables.
- Starting this month, the Windsor, Ontario will produce advanced ESS battery cells for commercial and grid-scale energy storage, supplying LG Energy Solution and Stellantis, the company said.
- Driven by AI data-centre growth and grid-stability needs, NextStar Energy says the ESS market will grow significantly over the next decade amid a cooling North American electric-vehicle market and U.S. policy changes, reflecting foresight rather than retreat.
- Brett Hillock said full-scale production will begin by the end of November, and the plant added Lithium Iron Phosphate chemistry after completing testing.
- NextStar plans to supply customers across North America, aiming for a workforce target of 2,500 while currently employing about 1,050 and hiring 50 to 100 workers per month.
- NextStar's shift reflects operational flexibility and foresight, as the Banwell Road plant began producing battery modules in October 2024 and about 800 contractors remain on site finishing areas for additional capacity opening early next year.
