Interior Wildlife Rehabilitation Society in Summerland Burnt Down Due to Wildfire
Rescuers moved nearly 30 birds, mammals and reptiles to Kamloops before the fire destroyed the Interior Wildlife Rehabilitation Society facility, officials said.
- The Interior Wildlife Rehabilitation Society facility near Summerland, British Columbia, was destroyed by the Bald Range Wildfire on August 7, though staff successfully evacuated nearly 30 animals before the blaze engulfed the site.
- Co-Founders Eva Hartmann and Jonathan Laumer evacuated the animals just before the fire reached the site, watching via security cameras as flames consumed the sanctuary and power failed.
- Volunteer Ryan Cope described the urgent rescue as a "Noah's Ark menagerie," noting the team had only one hour to remove the animals, including bats, skunks, a porcupine, a baby beaver named Poppy, two otters, 14 water birds, and three turtles.
- The animals were transferred to a wildlife center in Kamloops, about 137 miles northeast, to continue their recovery; Hartmann stated the organization's mission remains despite the sanctuary loss.
- Fundraising efforts have launched to help rebuild the facility and support Hartmann and Laumer, as the Bald Range Wildfire—which forced the evacuation of nearly 20,000 people—underscores broader challenges facing wildlife centers.
