Canada signs defence pact with the Philippines
- Signed on Sunday, Nov. 2, 2025, Philippine Defence Secretary Gilberto Teodoro Jr. and Canadian Defence Minister David McGuinty inked a Status of Visiting Forces Agreement in Makati City following a closed-door meeting.
 - To deter China's aggression, the pact lets Canada and Philippines hold joint battle-readiness drills and expand security alliances, supporting President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.'s push to diversify defense ties.
 - The SOVFA provides a legal framework for temporary foreign troop visits with weapons and large-scale exercises, and before it takes effect, it must be ratified by President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. and approved by two-thirds of the Philippine Senate.
 - Signed on November 2, the pact makes Canada the fifth country with a troop agreement with the Philippines, boosting joint operations and exercises as National Defence said.
 - Amid China's maritime tactics, Canadian Dark Vessel Detection System aids Manila after Chinese coastguard vessels used water cannons, while talks proceed with France, Singapore, and United Kingdom, Teodoro said.
