Canada now eligible to take part in Eurovision song contest
CBC/Radio-Canada will gain access to Eurovision networks and news exchanges after the European Broadcasting Union approved full membership, officials said.
- On Thursday, the Canadian national public broadcaster CBC/Radio-Canada became a full member of the European Broadcasting Union during its 96th general assembly in Prague, making Canada eligible to enter the Eurovision Song Contest.
- Membership followed a statutory revision approved at the assembly, allowing extra-European organizations aligned with Council of Europe standards to join; the broadcaster had collaborated with the EBU as an associate since the 1950s.
- President and chief executive of CBC/Radio-Canada Marie-Philippe Bouchard said the membership deepens cooperation; the network gains access to the Eurovision News Exchange, and Canadian singer Celine Dion won the 1988 competition for Switzerland.
- Canada would become the latest non-European entrant, following Australia, which has competed since 2015, and Israel, a member since 1973. Both nations set precedent for the broadcaster's expanded status.
- Human rights group Amnesty International criticized the EBU regarding Israel's participation, specifically its actions in Gaza, describing the union's refusal to suspend Israel as an act of "cowardice" and a "blatant double standard.
