Canada may fall short of goal to eliminating cervical cancer by 2040, cancer society says
Canada expects 430 cervical cancer deaths in 2025 as rates plateau due to lower HPV vaccination, reduced screening, and follow-up gaps, warns the Canadian Cancer Society.
- On Nov. 17, 2025, the Canadian Cancer Statistics report warned Canada may not reach the World Health Organization goal of virtually eliminating cervical cancer by 2040.
- After decades of decline from 1984 to 2005, data show cervical cancer rates have fluctuated, causing a plateau likely due to lower HPV vaccination, reduced screening and gaps in followup care, Jennifer Gillis says.
- The report projects 430 people will die from cervical cancer in 2025, a small portion of the 87,400 expected cancer deaths this year, and notes these deaths are potentially preventable.
- Gillis recommends switching from Pap tests to HPV testing for accuracy and less frequent screening, and urges free HPV vaccine access for those missing school programs due to the $215 per dose cost barrier.
- Several provinces have already implemented HPV testing in Ontario, British Columbia and Prince Edward Island, and The Canadian Press coverage by Hannah Alberga notes support from the Canadian Medical Association.
