Canada goalkeeper Dayne St. Clair booed in Minnesota, opens up about why he didn’t re-sign at United
St. Clair said Minnesota’s late offer and roster changes pushed him to leave, and he has allowed 1.9 goals per 90 minutes in Miami.
Dayne St. Clair returned to Allianz Field on Monday for Canada's training session, facing loud boos from Minnesota United fans on Tuesday. "Every time I touched the ball the boos were always louder than the cheers," St. Clair said.
Last December, the Loons offered St. Clair a contract exceeding $1 million annually, but he signed with Inter Miami for $808,730 instead. St. Clair claimed the initial "lowball offer" "rubbed me the wrong way from the very beginning."
In Miami, St. Clair's performance has declined statistically, allowing 1.9 goals against per 90 minutes this season. This represents an increase from the 1.0 goals against per 90 minutes he recorded with Minnesota last season.
St. Clair noted a pattern of core players departing, including midfielder Hassani Dotson, who signed with Seattle Sounders. Dotson left after contract disputes with former Loons Chief Soccer Officer Khaled El-Ahmad.
Canada coach Jesse Marsch has maintained support for St. Clair, praising his performances during the recent international window. St. Clair played two of three matches and earned praise for his work in a 1-0 win over Chile.
