Ice Hockey-Feisty Finland Beat Canada to Make World Championship Final
Finland scored three unanswered goals in the second period and will face host Switzerland in the final, while Canada plays Norway for bronze.
Canada fell 4-2 to Finland in the IIHF Ice Hockey World Championship semifinal in Zurich, Switzerland on Saturday, ending their bid for the gold medal game.
Despite leading 2-1 after the first period on goals from Canadian players Robert Thomas and Dylan Holloway, Canada faltered when Finland responded with three unanswered goals in the second period.
Finnish forward Aleksander Barkov scored 49 seconds into the second period, with Konsta Helenius and Aatu Raty adding goals. Finnish goalie Justus Annunen held firm against Canadian pressure in the final period.
Finland advances to face Switzerland in the championship final after the host nation defeated Norway 6-0. Canada will play Norway for the bronze medal.
Four-Time winners Finland seek their first victory since 2022, while Switzerland plays in their third straight final searching for a first gold medal. Canada previously suffered an overtime loss in February's Winter Olympic gold medal match.
In the 2022 World Cup at home, Finland went all the way and won the final against Canada. Now the national hockey team is ready for another gold medal match, having knocked out Canada in the second period of the semi-final in Switzerland.
For the third time in a row, Switzerland is moving into the final of the ice hockey World Cup. In the home game, the desired gold is finally going to work out. After all, the Swiss team members are avoiding record winners Canada - they are being eliminated by Finland.
