Beginning Wednesday, August 19, 2026, President Donald Trump's administration will impose 50 percent tariffs on $20.2bn worth of Canadian exports, covering electronics, machinery, furniture, dairy, and wine.
President Trump cited what he deems Ottawa's discriminatory treatment of U.S. automobiles, dairy, and alcoholic beverages as justification; eight Canadian provinces have banned U.S. alcohol sales since early last year.
Some 70 percent of Canadian exports go to the U.S., while the U.S. sends only 30 percent of its exports to Canada, creating an asymmetric trade relationship heavily favoring the United States.
On Monday, Prime Minister Mark Carney told reporters that Ottawa has a plan that "will cover all eventualities" if tariffs proceed, describing negotiations as "delicate" and "intense."
Seeking to reduce long-term dependence on the United States, Carney previously announced a trade diversification strategy focused on untapped markets in Asia and elsewhere.
